FAQ / JOTUNHEIM MANUAL

Overview

Note: This guide will be updated after each major content update to account for relevant changes.

This is a community server, meaning that there are a lot of players and it will feel very different from playing in a solo world. Some changes have to be made to support the massive number of players that keeps growing.

This also means that the way of progression and getting resources is very different than in a solo game, so to get to what you need, you might need to interact with other players!

After you’re whitelisted, it’s also important that you switch on your notifications and read all of the recent posts in the #announcements and #aesir-whispers channels in Discord. There may be special rules or tweaks set for the current seed that you’ll want to be made aware of. For example we may currently be on a special seed, like a No Map Seed, Limited Portal Seed, or Temp Hardcore Seed, or we may have introduced changes to the code that affects the way you connect to the server.

Gameplay & Interfaces

Seed Resets

A seed is the map that the server hosts for a designated time period. On Jotunheim, seeds are normally reset with the release of every major game update, such as a new biome or NPC. When this happens, everyone’s characters get reset and a new map is introduced. It is not possible to bring over any items or skills from the previous seed into the new one. This is an exciting time that most players look forward to, because it means that they get to experience new game content and explore an entirely new world!

Player Inactivity
  • You can disappear for up to 30 days without notice and your base will be safe. After 30 days, if you have not played, your base can be deleted and the terrain around it reset. If the base is determined at Admin discretion to be valuable for some purpose, it may be saved with all resources and materials deleted, just left as an empty beautiful art piece.
  • If you know you will be gone for longer than 30 days, please let us know. We will keep a record of all players who have notified us of an extended absence, and will not wipe their base.
  • However, we can only hold a base for up to 90 days. Anything longer than that will require special permission that would only be granted for the most extreme circumstances. For any such situation where you expect to be gone longer than 30 days, please use the #support-tickets to create a ticket to inform the staff of all of your bases and when you expect to return. If you do not return as expected after the timeframe, your base will be forfeit.
How To Chat

The players on Jotunheim are very friendly and more than willing to help, so if you’re ever stuck, frustrated, can’t find any resources, or just looking for someone to hang out with, feel free to reach out. Here’s how:

In-Game:

  • Press enter to open/close the chat.
  • Type ‘/s’ before your message in chat to “shout”, so everyone in-game can see what you are saying. This is very common, so don’t be shy.
  • If you type normally, only the people close to you can see what you are saying.
  • Press PageUp/PageDown with the chat open to scroll up/down.
  • If you need help or have a question, don’t hesitate to shout out, there are always players that may help you with your issue.

Discord:

This server provides a lot of opportunities to be active when not in-game, and you can get all the information you need via the different channels. Discord is where you’ll find any announcements or information about changes to the server. It’s also a great place to interact with other community members or get help from the staff.

  • There are many different channels you can use, please make sure you are in the right one according to what you have to say.
  • Regularly check our community and announcement channels, as you will find up to date info and announcements about the map or events there!
  • If you have an issue or need help that requires assistance from a mod or admin (someone broke into your home and stole things, someone is harassing you, etc.), please open a ticket. Simply go to the #support-tickets channel, click on the “Get Support!” button, and it will open a ticket for you. Go to the ticket and write down your issue.
  • There are voice channels too! Feel free to hop into any one of them and hang out and chat with other community members! This is a great way to make friends and play together!

Special Note: this server is a family-friendly one, so please keep that in mind when chatting or posting anything in-game or on Discord. Our staff will remove any posts that are deemed inappropriate.

Mobs

Mobs are a real danger in a multiplayer server. As a new player, lurking outside at night is extremely dangerous, and often lethal. Find/build a shelter as soon as possible, and schedule your day properly. Go hunting, collecting resources in daytime, and craft or improve your base at night.

Night Spawns:

  • To help with that, we’ve created a 2800m range Safe Zone around spawn where night spawns will not occur.
  • Everytime you progress through the game by killing a boss, it updates the kind of night spawns that will appear for your character.
  • For example, when you kill The Elder, which is the second boss in the game, mobs from the biome from which it came from (the Black Forest in this case) will spawn at night for you.
  • This varies for each player, but you may still be in danger from another player’s night spawns if you are around them at the time, especially if they have progressed further than you.

If you run into trouble, reach out to your fellow players as they are more than likely to help you out!

Tamed Animals:

  • It is completely and entirely against the rules to take any tamed animals without buying/trading them or getting permission and you should report any wandering animals by opening a support ticket.
  • If you do tame an animal, you should keep them confined to an enclosed space at your base, and not let them roam wild. It ruins the natural progression of the game to have 2 star wolves everywhere, so please keep this in mind. If you would like to sell/trade your tamed animals, you may do so.
  • If an admin/moderator finds a random tamed animal roaming around it will be killed without warning.
Resources

A Valheim world has a limited supply of resources. Because we share the same world that means we might sometimes have resource shortages (copper, tin, fine wood, etc.). This affects dungeons like burial chambers, crypts, and more too. This will be the biggest blocker in your progress. However, we have many systems in place to help with this:

  • Remember, you are playing on a community server. We have a lot of helpful players who will help you out. Some will offer trade, and some will offer to guide you to a location where you can find resources naturally.
  • The server admins regularly replace depleted resources, so don’t assume that because you’ve been somewhere once that it won’t ever have resources again.
  • There is custom code in place to automatically (and at random intervals) restore dungeons, crypts, draugr villages, goblin camps, etc.
  • Bees: Dvergr Villages in Meadows will sometimes hide beehives in their buildings, which will also respawn. However, keep your eyes on the trees as well. The admins occasionally place them high up there.
  • Trees and rocks: The admins have a tool that they use to restore trees from stumps and partially mined rocks to their full form. If you fully mine a rock or destroy a tree stump, this tool won’t restore it. That isn’t against the rules, just be aware of how it works. Basically, don’t fully remove rocks/trees unless you want them to be gone forever.
  • Mining: Depending on the ore you are mining, a big part of the deposit may be underground (like an iceberg), so you have to carefully dig around it to reveal the whole node or vein. For copper and silver, you can dig around and under the node to expose it fully. If you’re lucky, you might be able to break it all at once with a few hits from your pickaxe.

What resources are safe for me to build on?

  • In general, you cannot build on or block access to any resource. In practice, what this means it that you cannot build on or block access to (with wards, walls, etc.) any of the following: Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, Obsidian, Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, Draugr Villages, Fuling Camps, Troll Caves, Mountain Caves, Tar Pits, Dragon Eggs, Giant Bones, Giant Armor, and Giant Weapons, etc.
  • Regular rocks, trees, and Mistland Roots do not count towards this rule. Please note that any base or wards that break this rule will be destroyed and wiped without notice and there will be no base materials left behind.
  • Also note that this list may become outdated as the game updates with new resources, but it should be obvious from this list what is and isn’t allowed to be built on when you’re making decisions. Any action taken that prevents other players from accessing resources is considered a rule-breaking action and can result in a ban.
  • The only exception is if you are actively harvesting the resource yourself, then it is not a problem. However, you cannot block or hide a resource and then log off so you can harvest it later. If you’re ever unsure, just ask, and we can always update the rule!
Ships, Sailing, Exploration and Waystations

All boats constructed by you can be broken down with the hammer and it’s encouraged that you do when you dock to prevent boat thefts.

There’s a bridge blocking my boat from passing through a river, can I destroy it?

  • In general, if a bridge is blocking a waterway from boats using it, you may make the bridge taller without permission from its owner. However you can’t just destroy the bridge and move on leaving a destroyed bridge behind. If there is a ward blocking you, let the staff team know.
  • Use the #support-tickets channel to create a ticket. If you must break it, break only just enough to let a boat pass through, and try to leave the rest intact.

Sailing is a great way to explore the map! Whether you are a new player or a returning player joining the current seed for the first time, you are granted one free Karve, which you may claim from the dock at Spawn Island.

  • If you happen to lose this boat, you may NOT claim another one, so keep it safe by breaking it and storing it in a chest.
  • On the server, boats will take less damage and have 1.2x the health of what they do normally.
  • You can also destroy boats and carts with a hammer. This only works if nobody is standing on the ship or using the cart, and the containers inside them are empty. Make sure that you are in shallow waters or your materials will drop to the bottom of the ocean!

Our server also features a portal system to get around the world map easily:

Server Portal Hub:

  • This is a place built by the staff that will take you to various directions around the map, important event areas, Trader NPCs, and Forsaken Power Stones.
  • You can access the Hub via the portal at Spawn Island or through one of the Waystations.
  • To unlock the waystation or NPC trader portals, you must travel to them in person first, then go through the server hub portal from that location. This will permanently unlock it for you.
  • You have one free portal unlock each seed, which you can use to access one of the Inner or Middle ring waystations without traveling there.
  • To unlock the boss power stone portals, you must defeat the boss first.

Waystations:

  • These are portal stations that can be found at various cardinal directions around the map, and are connected to major islands and landmasses.
  • There are currently 20 waystations scattered around the map, which are divided into Inner, Middle, and Outer rings.
  • Portal Huts can be found at each waystation, which offer players quick access to the server’s portal system without needing to build their own portal shack nearby. Each player or group may claim ONE portal hut at ONE of the waystations only. More guidelines are listed inside the huts in-game.
  • To unlock a waystation portal in the Server Hub, you must first travel to that waystation and go through the portal there. This will permanently unlock it for you.
  • You have ONE free waystation portal unlock each seed, meaning you do not have to travel to that waystation first. This only applies to the Inner and Middle circle.
Bosses, Powers, and Trader NPCs

Bosses:

Just like in a solo game, you can find the Forsaken Altars around the map to locate the boss summon locations, so you can summon the boss, and defeat it.

  • If you are within 80m of a boss kill, you get credit for the boss kill. Otherwise, you don’t. This affects the item drops as well as items you can unlock at Haldor. If you’re fighting a boss with a group of friends, make sure you don’t finish off the kill on the boss until everyone is alive and near the boss or they may not get the credit.
  • Please do not hang around bosses if you are not part of the fight. Claiming credit for a boss you weren’t a part of or getting an extra item from another group killing a boss is against the rules and can end up getting you in trouble. If you see a group starting a boss fight, you can always ask to join them if you are properly geared at the same level as the other players, but they have to agree to it before it’s acceptable. Jumping into someone’s boss fight can ruin the fun for them, and gathering the items needed to spawn a boss is part of the challenge.

Powers:

Unlike a normal game, the sacrificial stones that grant powers are not at spawn.

  • The main reason for this is we don’t want new players having access to end-game boss abilities.
  • All sacrificial stones are hidden around the world, the first person who finds it and mounts a trophy at the start of each new seed should submit a support ticket to let the admins know.
  • The boss power stone can be accessed via its portal at the Server Portal Hub after you have defeated that boss.

Trader NPC Unlocks and Turn-Ins:

  • Progressing through the game by defeating bosses will occasionally unlock new items at the Haldor (Trader) store.
  • Hildir, the second Trader NPC in the game, will offer you miniquests to defeat various minibosses in different biomes, which in turn drop special chests to be returned to her to unlock new items in her store.
  • When turning in a Hildir Chest as a group, all players must be within 20m of Hildir to get credit for the turn-in.
  • As with boss kills, it is against the rules to claim credit for a Hildir’s Quest turn-in when you were not part of it. Please verify that everyone who did the quest with you is nearby, and that nobody else is nearby, before handing in the chest.
Coordinates
  • Sometimes we use coordinates for direction. In Valheim there are 3 coordinates:

X: latitude
Y: altitude
Z: longitude

The X=0 Z=0 point is the center of the map (spawn). Something like this:
(this is just an example, not representing the current world)

Request Support
  • This report command will send us the coordinates for your current location and include the message you sent with your report.
  • Once complete, open Discord and open a Support Ticket. Please include the Report ID so we can reference the details.
Base Building

Building near/on Dungeon, Crypt, Cave, Draugr Village, Goblin Village, Dvergr Town, etc.

  • Dungeons/Crypts/Caves/Villages/etc. are crucial to the progression of the game for newer players, and allowing others to build on them prevents access to key resources for new players.
  • Do not build on, block off, or ward any of the above or future dungeons in any way. This includes large structures in the Mistlands.
  • A little sign or a chest to store some resources is fine, but anything far beyond that (like a walled structure) is against the rules. Please treat Troll Caves the same as a dungeon. Portals and other structures found on top of or within a wards distance (32m) of any of the above will be destroyed with or without notice and there will be no compensation.
  • Also note, all of the above mentioned things respawn automatically on this server at random intervals. When they are respawned, any player builds placed there will be destroyed and no resources will be left behind. You have been warned.
    Repeat offenders will be banned.

I found an abandoned base, can I have it?

  • If there is a base you believe to be abandoned, you can use the #support-tickets channel to create a ticket with the details along with a screenshot of the base and the coordinates (press F5 and type ‘pos’).
  • You may not do anything to any abandoned base without first getting permission via a support ticket. Even if the owner of the base has told you you may have it, you must first reach out to us via a support ticket.
  • Failure to follow this process may result in you receiving a ban, as we will determine that you have stolen the base. We have tools to track down who the base belongs to, whether or not it is truly abandoned, and can quickly destroy it or de-ward it as needed.

What do I do if I find an island with giant X’s on the shore?

  • If you see an island surrounded by giant ‘X’ building pieces all along the coast, do not go there. Turn around and go somewhere else. Entering the island, building on it, or taking resources from that island without permission may result in a ban.
  • This also means you should not place X’s around anything to mark your territory.
  • This is an island that has been blocked for community event purposes. It may look like this:

Here are some tips for where and how to build your first base:

  • Location: It may seem obvious, but the meadows are the best place for a new player’s base. No Trolls or other strong mobs around, especially within the Safe Zone. If you are an experienced player, Black Forest or at the border of a Meadows and Black Forest is also a good place for a starter base. We recommend sailing to a different island as soon as possible. Resources on the inner islands are meager and the population is mostly dense. Dense population also means your FPS will suffer.
  • Instances: Many players start to experience a decline in their game’s performance at 10k instances, and it becomes unplayable beyond 15k instances. Each biome comes with its own base instance count, and more populated areas will have higher instances, so check before you build and plan accordingly. Players may be asked to reduce their base instances or remove their build entirely if it’s found to be lagging in the area.
  • Lighting and decorations: Some items in the game have special properties that can reduce the performance of your game if overused. These properties include particles, reflective surfaces, smoke, lights, and moving elements, which can be found in things like wisp torches, wards, fires, iron/copper cage walls, trees, and crops. It’s important to be strategic when placing these things in your builds to avoid lag in the area.
  • Neighbors: Please be considerate when building near others. Communicate with your neighbors to agree on base limits, instance management, and future plans for building. Be courteous when extending your base and don’t push up against other people’s spaces. If you do not wish others building too close to your base, you can ward the area around it. However, you cannot ward it after a player has settled down there.
  • Trenches: Trenches can be ugly and ruin the look of your base, so try to use a combo of techniques. The best method is to build your base on high ground, and dig a little bit around so it looks like your base is just on a hill, rather than an unnatural ditch surrounding your base. You can add walls for further protection.
  • Walls: For maximum security it is advised to build a wall around your base, on the inner side of your trench. Some mobs have projectile or area-of-effect attacks (such as Shamans, Fulings, and Trolls) and they can destroy your building, crafting equipment, tamed animals, or even crops from a distance.
  • Aggro: Mobs do not attack everything. They will mostly go for torches, crafting stations, wards and other similar things. They will not attack walls/doors by default, but if they are going after a player and a wall is between them, they may attack. It’s best to stay out of sight of mobs and make sure that anything you don’t want them to destroy is behind a wall. Some mobs are afraid of fire too so you can use that to scare them off.
  • Shoreline: Another good defense option is to build your base at the shoreline. In this case, the mobs can attack your base only from one direction, and you have to build trenches, and walls on that side. Building at the shoreline will also give you quick access to place down your boat when you need to sail.
  • Island or artificial island: Another good solution is to build your base on an island, or an artificial island. The artificial island is not new player friendly, because you need a lot of stone to elevate the ground, but if you find a small island or even a rock close to the shore, that’s a good place for a starter base.
Signs

When editing signs, you may use special formatting codes to change their colors, sizes or symbols creatively. However, the following guidelines ensure respect and non-disruption among players by avoiding anything that stands out unnaturally against the game’s environment:

  • No sign should exceed the border or area of a base, and should not be offensively targeting another player or used in a disturbing/not-family friendly way.
  • Any giant floating text that is significantly offset from a structure is not allowed. Text can be large, but it should be attached to the facade of a structure you built yourself.
  • Signs and their text cannot interfere with the Viking theme of Valheim.
  • Cannot block or interrupt scenic views or the visibility of resources. A sign cannot be used as an exploit or to get an advantage over others.
  • Cannot be used as a way to mark the borders of a base (such as by creating a floating circle or a painted circle on the ground).
  • Creative uses of signs are allowed and can be integrated with builds, so long as they are done tastefully and respect the theme of the game.
  • Special Note: If you are ever unsure about whether the way you want to use your sign is allowed, open a support ticket. All signs can undergo review by a staff member at any time to ensure compliance.
Portals

On Jotunheim, we have a unique portal system that differs slightly from the base game. This is done to better cater to our large community and help keep your portals and bases safer.

  1. Group Portals – Shared quota with your group, shared usage with your group. More info can be found in the Group Manager section of this guide.
  2. Public Portals – These can connect to any other public portal and anyone can use them. They are also expensive to make but have no limit to how many you can make.
  • Cost: Each portal has a separate resource cost and quota. So you can have a mix of all of them. There is no limit to the number of public portals, but they cost a queen drop to make so it’s not cheap.
  • Map icons: Portals also now have icons on the map that you can toggle on or off in the bottom right of your map. Additionally, the icons vary based on which portal type it is, and will also display the portal tag of the portal. This should make it easy to track down and connect to any portal!
  • Other players’ portals: Taking other players’ public portals without their permission is frowned upon by most of our players. If you want to use public portals to explore, make sure to ask the owner or ask in the chat if someone can offer you a public portal to get to an area. There are always people online that offer to help and a lot of them have portals all over the map.
  • Use unique tags: You can be sure there are a bunch of public portals called base, farm, plains, etc. So use unique portal tags like 432_farm or a few letters from your character name like ark_base. You can combine these with small or low capital letters. Portal names are case-sensitive.
  • Emergency portal: If you have enough materials, build an extra emergency portal or two. This is a portal at your base with a unique name that you remember, but doesn’t connect anywhere. Then you carry the materials to build another portal with you at all times. If you are ever stuck somewhere, or something bad happens like you used an unnamed portal, you can build a new portal and set it to the same name as your emergency portal to return home.
Group Management
  • Warning: never join a group with anyone you don’t trust fully!
  • Important: Guilds cannot use the Group Manager.

Group Manager:

The Group Manager is a special feature on Jotunheim and a new item in the Misc tab of the hammer that looks like Hildir’s Wagon. Anyone who decides to form a group will be able to share their portals with each other.

  • The materials needed to create a Group Manager are similar to a Portal. Once you have collected those materials, you will learn the new recipe.
  1. Place the Group Manager.
    • When you create the Group Manager, it cannot be moved or broken unless you disband the group. So choose its location wisely.
  2. You’ll be prompted to create a group name.
    • This group name must be unique and will be visible to everyone, so don’t choose anything inappropriate or offensive.
    • The name of a group can never be changed, so please choose wisely.
  3. Once the group is created, you can add, remove, and view members of the group.
    • Main action (E) is to add a member. To add someone, they must be nearby.
      • They will be prompted to accept you adding them to the group. They must accept within a certain amount of time or the invite will time out.
    • Secondary action (Shift + E) Remove a member.
    • Third action (Ctrl + E), view member list.

Anyone in the group, can remove or add anyone from or to the group. There is no designated group leader.

  • You must be near the Group Manager to be added to a group.
  • You can only join 1 Group at a time.
  • To leave a group, just ‘remove a member’ and type your own name.
    • If you leave or are removed from a group, you’ll lose access to any group portal you’ve built.
  • When removing a player, make sure it’s agreed upon by your group. If you remove a player from a group without a good reason, this may be considered a rule 1 violation, at minimum. You cannot cut someone off from the things they’ve built and resources they’ve helped collect out of anger.
  • Group members are able to access each other’s Tombstones.
  • DO NOT join a group if you do not fully trust the people you’ll be playing with.

If the last member of the group is removed, then the Group Manger will break, the group will be disbanded.

  • All the group portals will break, and their mats will drop where the Group Manager used to be.
  • Group wards will still remain but be inaccessible. It is recommended you break all group wards before disbanding a group. You can re-create a group with the same name to regain access to the wards.
  • Due to all of this, it is not recommended to regularly leave and join groups.

A group’s base portal amount is 0. Once the group has at least 1 member you’ll get 4 Group Portals per group member.

  • Examples:
    • A group with 1 member would have a Group Portal count of 4
    • A group with 2 members would have a Group Portal count of 8
    • A group with 5 members would have a Group Portal count of 20
  • If you have maxed out the portals that can be built for your group, you will not be able to remove a group member until you reduce your groups portal count.
  • Group members will still be able to build their own private portals, but those will not be shared with the rest of the group and will not count from the group’s portal quota.

In addition to the new Group Manager, we’ve added two new Ward types; they will appear to the right of the Group Manager on your hammer.

  • The two variants are as follows:
    • 30m Radius (Group Ward)
    • 8m Radius (Small Group Ward)
  • You will be unable to create a group ward unless you’re in a group.
  • Group Wards will automatically add every member of the group to the Group Ward(s).

Any group of 10 or more can submit a support-ticket to request a group forum.

  • After 30 days of no activity the group forum will be deleted. We will not reach out before deletion. If you wanna keep the forum, stay active.
  • No group service requirements or perks.
  • Shared #hire-a-group channel.
  • Shared group-hall channel for group to group communications.
Cartography Tables
  • Yes, with the owners permission.
  • Players are responsible for their own progression. So touching other cartography tables is their own choice.
  • If you inadvertently touch a cartography table and want to remove the information  you can Press F5 to open the console and type “resetsharedmap”. All of the marks and shared map exploration received from a cartography table will be erased from your personal map.
Interface & Player Commands
  • Pressing F2: this will open a window for more specific map and connection data and to see who is online. If you press tab before F2 or escape, you can also scroll up and down in the player list, as a cursor appears.
  • Pressing F5: this opens the game console. There are a couple commands you can use as a player:
    • help – displays info about all the rest of the commands you can use
    • die – this will kill yourself, use with caution
    • pos – get the X/Y/Z coordinates. You will likely need this when submitting a support ticket, if specific locations are relevant
    • resetspawn – reset the location you are waking up to spawn
    • unbind / resetbinds / bind / printbinds – different commands using custom keybindings
    • showgizmo – enables/disables the visualization of the rotation direction when placing objects with Vidars Hammer. Disabling this can help when trying to place small objects.
    • portalcount – get a summary of your current state/limits for the portal types you currently have placed.
  • /my-spells – type this command in any channel to get a list of your Admin Shop Spell purchases. Only you will be able to see this message.
  • /price-check – you can search for an item’s price with this command. Includes quantity option to give total cost, lets you know if the item can be undercut & traded, etc. Only you will be able to see this message.
  • /link-socials – you can use slash commands on discord to link your socials automatically so we can verify you are entered for the raffle.
Tombstones

Tombstones can only be looted by the person who died, or by someone in their group. This is to help stop a number of accidental and intentional thefts from tombstones.

  • Additionally, all tombstones will automatically despawn after 30 days. This should help with some of the clutter from super old tombstones.
  • Group members are able to access each other’s Tombstones.
Ashlands

The following resources respawn in the Ashlands (do not build too close to these):

  • Putrid Hole
  • Charred Fortress
  • Flametal
  • Ashland Mob Spawners
  • Volture Nest
  • Mysterious Locations
  • Ashlands Boss Area

Community

Trading

In a solo game you often grind so much Gold Coins that you can’t store even in a black metal chest, but on a multiplayer server gold is the main currency for trade. You can get Gold from Burial Chambers, Troll Caves, Sunken Crypts, certain mobs (Troll, Fuling, Dvergr), and trading.

  • If you have items you don’t need, sell them, or barter them for something else.
  • Don’t be afraid to trade. There are buyers who will buy your wood/stone, even your resin if you have surplus. There are sellers who will sell just about anything you need.
  • The Market is a server trading hub that allows players to book stalls for free and trade from them. These are especially good for starter or temporary traders who do not yet have the means to establish their own fully-stocked shop, or cannot compete with other more prominent traders.
  • There is also a regular Popup Shop hosted by the staff team that will buy surplus resources. The resources bought each Popup varies, so keep that in mind as it’s a great way to earn some extra coin! Stay tuned to the #events channel in discord to find out when.
  • Reminders:
    • Never throw items when you are trading or exchanging items in any way.
    • Never open a chest when someone else is using it and move items in it, this can cause them to disappear, as the game tries to process the actions of 2 players at the same time.
    • Always use a cart or the trading chests at admin run stores.

There is an official Server Pricelist, you can find it pinned on the discord’s trading channel or on the website.

  • Check the official price list, and send a message to the local chat (use /s to shout in game), or post your offer on the #trading channel on Discord.
  • /price-check – you can search for an item’s price with this command on Discord. Includes quantity option to give total cost, lets you know if the item can be undercut & traded, etc. Only you will be able to see this message.
Quests, Challenges and Treasure Hunts

We offer a wide variety of server quests, special challenges and treasure hunts at different levels of difficulty, every player can do them at any point of time.

  • Quest Ruin at Spawn Island
  • Challenges info board at Spawn Island
  • Treasure Hunt Wagon at Spawn Island
  • Some server builds also contain hidden treasure chests that you can look for and claim!
  • Quests and challenges are made with great effort and reward you by the experience. Most are made by the staff, but players are welcome to create them too. Send a dm to Moon if you want to make it an official one.
  • Quest may be located across the whole map, and most of them are marked with an exclamation mark (!) if they are not obvious enough. If you find one on your own, ask a staff member or open a ticket to find out which one it is. It’s best to start at the Quest Ruin at Spawn, as you will not know what to do or where to go otherwise, causing you to miss a crucial part of the quest’s lore and context.
  • Please do not take or destroy anything at the quest locations if you are not actively doing the quest, and sharing any information or solutions to solve them is forbidden.
  • You might need the coordinate system for solving a quest using X,Y,Z to find specific positions. For this, open the console by pressing F5 and type pos.
  • You might need to translate runes for a quest, for this we are working with this translator: https://valhyr.com/pages/rune-translator

Events

Staff-run events:

We offer different events as often as the team has time to run them. From big events like our Flea market, which get planned weeks ahead, to mini events like a tool course or a Fuling raid, there will be something for everyone’s taste. For all event info, please watch the #events channel on Discord, and make sure to have your notifications on.

  • Flea Market: our biggest event by far, meant to give players the opportunity to sell their wares, as well as play games, hunt for treasures and enjoy individual offers created by players. These usually have a unique seasonal theme every time too!
  • Server Shops: these include the Pop-Up Shop, the Market, Beehive, Serpent Hut, and Haldore store, meant to trade specific items with players. More info can be found in the Server Shops section of this guide.
  • Games and Competitions: our staff organizes a variety of fun PvP, PvE, building, strategy or racing games such as Thor’s Chariot, The Great Hunt, Siege Siblings, The Arena and other contests. Some of these are built with special coding in place to create special effects and unique experiences on the game.
  • Home Tour: usually takes place towards the end of the seed and showcases the best builds from players.
  • Mini Workshops: occasionally, some of our skilled staff members would offer building workshops, where they will give you tips-and-tricks and answer all your questions. These happen in-game and on Discord’s Voice Chat.
  • Ragnarok: an end-of-the-world event that takes place at the end of a seed. Occurs with slightly different conditions each time, but often includes a lot of chaos and mayhem!
  • Völur: a roleplay character that offers secrets that no player will find anywhere else on the server. What is hidden will be of great value to most players and adds to the in game content of the server.

Player-run events:

Players are welcome to propose and run their own events too!

  • Some of the events that have been previously organized by players include a village marketplace, boat races, tamed animal races, building competitions, hunts, PvP tournaments (in dedicated areas only), and more!
  • You are welcome to work on these by yourself, or suggest them in the #suggestions channel on Discord.
  • Depending on the proposed event, admins will occasionally assist you with these by providing you with materials or protection spells for your builds.
  • You may use the #in-game-advertising channel to promote your event.

Social Media:

Some events involve our social media pages, and a Discord command has been created to help with these types of events.

  • /link-socials – You can use slash commands on discord to link your socials automatically so we can verify you are entered for the raffle.
  • Use /link-socials and then you will be prompted to enter your handles.
  • For these types of events you will get one entry per account you follow!
  • If you have already followed us, you will automatically be entered as long as you have used the /link-socials command once before.
Server Shops

These are all separate shops that open on different days and times depending on staff availability, and will all get announced in the #events channel on Discord and in-game.

  • The accepted currency for those shops are Gold Coins and Ymir flesh only. You can exchange Coins to Ymir and vice-versa at Haldor the Trader. Ymir is much lighter than Coins and is worth 120 Gold, making it easier to carry in your inventory. Watch out when you sell to him, he will revert your Ymir back to Coins, and if your inventory is full, you might end up losing a portion of your money, so be careful when exchanging!

Aesir Shop:

  • Offers unique spells and items such as the Unbreakable Oath, Vidar’s Hammer, renewable pickables, and seasonal items.
  • More info can be found in the Aesir Shop List section below.

Pop-Up Shop:

  • Meant for getting money back into the system for not much needed items. The item list will get posted a day in advance, with the date/time of the shop.
  • The shop will buy predefined items and all Boss Trophies from players.
  •  A player is allowed to sell items for one other player. That player must first open a support ticket so that the staff can be aware of this.
  • Guild property is not allowed to be sold here.
  • If an Admin is present, players will also be able to purchase spells from the admin shop there.
  • The popup shop will be held regularly every second week, depending on staff availability.
  • You can access the shop via the portal at the lower level of the Server Hub.

Flea Market:

  • The event will be held at least once per map. This is similar to the Pop-Up shop, but there are also player stalls selling various goods.
  • Features carnival-style games with rare prizes.
  • Features a unique theme and special builds at every iteration.

The Market:

  • A public trading hub that features different stalls that sell different items.
  • Players may book these stalls for free.

The Beehive:

  • Meant to sell Queen Bees only, as they are one of the rarest items on the server. It will open randomly, depending on the availability of staff. You can find it on spawn island.

HaldOre Store:

  • Meant for those who are in big need of more metals. Offers raw ore in exchange for other items.
  • You can find the store following the signs at spawn island.

Serpent Hut:

  • Exchanges fish of all kinds and levels for tree seeds.

The Queenbreaker Shop:

  • A shop that exchanges Sealbreakers for Seeker Soldier Trophies.
Aesir Shop List

These are all separate shops that open on different days and times depending on staff availability, and will all get announced in the #events channel on Discord and in-game.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The accepted currency for those shops are Gold Coins and Ymir flesh only. You can exchange Coins to Ymir and vice-versa at Haldor the Trader. Ymir is much lighter than Coins and is worth 120 Gold, making it easier to carry in your inventory. Watch out when you sell to him, he will revert your Ymir back to Coins, and if your inventory is full, you might end up losing a portion of your money, so be careful when exchanging!
  • /my-spells: type this command in any channel to get a list of your Admin Shop Spell purchases. Only you will be able to see this message.
  • Vidar’s Hammer cannot be purchased for another player using your own funds or group funds. It must be purchased with money earned by that player directly, and then the reward must go directly to that player.
  • You may not gift Admin Shop items, but you can designate someone to purchase it for you with your own money if you are not able to attend an event where it is being sold.
  • Aesir Shop items can be given as a reward for an approved event. Submit a support ticket if you’d like to host or sponsor an official event. All events using an Admin Shop item as a reward must be approved by an Admin. A viking must have been on the server for 30+ days to qualify for such a reward.
SPELLDESCRIPTION
Unbreakable Oath – 10000gMakes built structures unbreakable, so they can’t get destroyed by mobs or weapons.
– Gets applied from an admin with a radius tool, as big as needed in one area. It applies to each individual built instance within the radius, so if it gets destroyed with the hammer, the spell is gone from that piece, and any new piece will not have it as well.
– It will get applied within an area, but not in different places. So if you have a base that has several builds, but they are all in one big area, that’s fine. If you have a building, and you need to run a while or teleport to another part, that part would not get the spell.
– Try to be finished with your build and open a ticket when you want to get the spell applied.

Public Build Submission

The staff at Jotunheim has been constantly amazed by the wonderful structures built by our players – but even more so amazed at the generosity of our players in contributing to the community. We have decided to introduce a program that would allow public builds that are made by players to be submitted for protection by Admin spells. These builds would become eternally-flamed and completely indestructible. Examples of such builds may be:

Examples of such builds may be:

  • Bridges
  • Public Docks
  • Public Portal Hubs
  • Landmarks
  • Something we didn’t think of? Suggest it and we may protect it!

Some conditions apply:

  • All builds are subject to staff approval before being protected. Just because you built it does not mean it will be protected. If you are not sure, it is best to contact the staff team with your idea before you get too far along.
  • All builds must be for the greater improvement of the Jotunheim community and its player population.
  • Jotunheim staff may request changes to the build before it can be protected. You do not have to accept these changes, but they may be required if you wish for your build to become protected.
  • When you submit a build for public use, you are responsible to maintain it, but it is no longer considered yours. It is now server infrastructure.
  • All builds must meet a general standard to be protected, however these will be decided on a case-by-case basis. In general:
    • Overall design of the build must be unique. (A square box base with minimal furniture won’t be accepted no matter how useful it is.)
    • Bridges must have proper clearance for longboats and below.
    • Portal Hubs must link to general locations – not player homes, etc.
    • Jotunheim staff reserves the right to change any and all qualifying rules based on the build at hand and the program progression.

Want to submit a build for Public Use Protection?

Open a #support-tickets and include the following information:

  • Name of Project/Build:
  • Location: (press F5 in game and type pos to get the coordinates and share them here)
  • Description: (what is the project/build meant for? Any ideas or details should go here)
  • Anything Else: (any other details we should consider before making a decision on protection?)
Moar Snap Angles Challenge

This is no simple test of hammer and timber—only those who have truly proven their commitment to our community and shown mastery in their craft may embark on this trial. Should you succeed you will stand among Jotunheim’s most skilled builders, and will be rewarded with 16x snap angles on your Vidar hammer. We’re excited to see how these master architects will shape our lands as never before. Anyone who completes the challenge will have their names immortalized in the Hall of Stoosh!

Be warned: Only one Viking can attempt the challenge at a time. This will push your building skills to their limits and demand advanced building techniques to complete. Read on to see if you have what it takes to claim your place in The Hall of Stoosh. Do not share any hints, screenshots, or information about the test area if you take on the challenge.

Requirements:

  • Played on Jotunheim for at least two seeds.
  • Member of the community for at least 6 months.
  • Has claimed Vidar’s Hammer at least 2 times and has claimed Vidar on the current seed.
  • No instances of any rule issues within the last year.
  • Player has made a contribution to the server this seed in the form of one public building.
    • Build must be made officially public via a support ticket and approved by an admin.
  1. If you meet all of these criteria, you must undergo a test, replicating a specific building at the Moar Snap Angles challenge area.
    • Only one player can undergo the challenge at a time.
    • Instructions on how to access the test area will be provided in your Support Ticket.
  2. To attempt the challenge you need to open a support ticket stating you’d like to take on the Moar Snap Angles Challenge. You also need to provide a screenshot, and the POS of the public build you submitted this seed that was approved by an admin.
  3. When you feel you have fully re-created the building for the test, ping @Admin in your support ticket, and we will review your test re-creation to determine if you passed or failed.
    • You get two chances to pass.
    • If you fail the first inspection, you can either stop the challenge, and try one more time at a later date when you feel you’re ready or attempt to fix the build, and then request one final inspection for this seed.
      • No hints will be provided as to why you failed your first inspection.
    • If you fail a second time, you must wait until the next seed to try again.
    • If the admin has deemed you’ve passed the test, we will respond to you in your support ticket letting you know.

Coming soon. We’ll provide details at a later date.

Bans & Appeals

Common Reasons for Bans

We would like to clearly state that a ban is only reserved for clear violation of the rules (meaning the offender is fully aware they are breaking the rules), and no ban goes without a ‘thread’ of evidence. When offenders are banned, that means we already have logs, screenshots and/or player testimonies, that lead to the decision of the offender’s banishment. Without any clear evidence, a ban cannot happen. Lying during the appeal is a very bad idea.

The most common why people get banned are 4 things:

  • Stealing: This is straightforward, yet many people miss it. One would think the concept of ‘do not take anything that is not yours’ is plain and simple, yet you’d be surprised at the number of people that break this rule. Imagine being away for a day or two, then returning to your base, and discovering your valuable items are gone. All because someone thought you’re not active enough and your belongings suddenly became free for the taking. We don’t like thieves, and we try our best to make sure you don’t end up being a victim.
  • Unauthorized base take-over: This one, doesn’t happen as often as stealing, but close enough. Usually people open tickets to check if the owner of said structure is still active or not. It’s easy to assume someone is ‘inactive’ when they are not online during your active hours. But, not everyone is in the same time zone and some people do take breaks. Staff members have a way to check when someone last logged in, and even reach out to the owner to get their permission. However, there are some players that do not do the right thing and just decide someone’s base is ‘abandoned’.
  • Cheating: Somehow, people think they will get away with this. I don’t know why, but they do. Cheaters are blatantly obvious when they can do things that most players can’t. For example, carry items that weigh 99999999999, or have skills at 999999999. Some of them can run faster than Admins can fly. Some do try to be subtle and not so obvious. However, we’ve been here long enough to know what a regular player looks like, and what’s unusual.
  • Griefing: We take griefing very seriously. These are not as common as the others, but every now and then, someone decides to go on a rampage. We aim to protect your precious builds as much as we can, and we try to banish griefers as quickly as possible. We also have tools and abilities that would help players, if they experienced griefing, such as base roll-backs and whatnot.

These however, are just the common reasons. There are also other not so common reasons.

How to Avoid Getting Banned

This is really simple guys. Just follow the rules. If you are unsure or feel uncertain about a rule, then open a ticket and discuss it with staff. We’re more than happy to explain how the rules work and the reasoning behind them. DO NOT assume some rules are ‘irrelevant’ or ‘small time’ than others. Everyone is welcome to contend and discuss the rules, but until said rules are changed, follow them as they are.

Please do not assume you will get away with breaking the rules, because no one is watching. Many made this mistake, and paid dearly for it. It may take time for us to catch offenders, as a case needs to be built, but we eventually get them.

Appeal Process

So you’ve made a cardinal sin and now face the appeal. Everyone that is banned, has the opportunity to make an appeal. Admins are not perfect, and sometimes we make mistakes. What we expect from players during the appeal is to provide us the reason behind their actions. Did you take the item because the owner said you can, but forgot? Did you take someone’s belongings by mistake, thinking it was yours? Whatever the reason is, now would be a good time to speak up. We expect this conversation to remain civil and calm. If the reasons seem justified, we might consider lifting the ban.

The most common mistake people make during an appeal is lying. When offenders lie in their appeal, we put forward the evidence, then they change their tune, their story and reasoning suddenly changes. Lying on the appeal is a bad idea, because it tells us that the offender is being deceptive. We cannot trust they wont re-offend. As the infographic tells us, ‘Lies are the shovel that digs your hole deeper’.
